Published Date: 21 October 2011, 12:00 AM

Sixteen, young up-and-coming sports’ stars have been awarded a City of Melville Youth Sports Scholarship, entitling them to the City’s premier recreation facilities.

At a ceremony on Wednesday, 12 October 2011, each recipient was recognised for promise at a state or national level in their chosen sport, which this year included soccer, water polo, swimming, badminton and fencing.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the City was proud to support high-achieving youth by offering its world-class facilities at no cost for 12 months.

“The scholarship will allow these young role models to train regularly with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, giving them the competitive edge,” he said.

“I congratulate all recipients of the Youth Sports Scholarship, which helps take the financial burden off parents by giving winners complimentary use of the Melville Recreation Centre and the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre (currently receiving an exciting $5 million redevelopment due for completion in April 2012).”

Since 1994, the City has been offering the Youth Sports Scholarship scheme to young people, aged 12 to 19 years old, who live in the City of Melville and have shown promise at a state or national level.
