More than 100 people attended the long-awaited opening of the City of Melville’s Illuminate Youth Art Exhibition on Thursday, 23 April at Heathcote Museum and Gallery.

The exhibition, showcasing work from young people aged 12 to 25, is one of several YAC It Up Alternative Events being offered by the City while outdoor youth concert YAC It Up undergoes a review. The event has allowed young artists the opportunity to display their work in a professional gallery space.

Community Development Officer – Youth, Callum Prior said the event was the culmination of two months of workshops in which five young artists worked with professional artists Minaxi May and Dan Duggan. “The professional artists helped the young people develop their skills and techniques. Participants were also involved in the installation of their pieces, working with gallery staff and learning about the whole process of staging a professional gallery show,” he said.

“The Melville Youth Advisory Council (YAC) wanted to support a positive and unique event that celebrates young people. A number of participants from the City’s monthly urban art program, PHAZE, also created works for the exhibition – adding to a diverse, eclectic range of pieces on display,” he said.

Those in attendance at the exhibition opening included Mayor Russell Aubrey and Community Development Director Christine Young. Mayor Aubrey said the focus in the wider community was unfortunately often on negative issues in relation to young people. “The exhibition is a way to highlight the talent and passion young people have that sometimes goes unseen. The City is committed to ensuring they are not overlooked,” he said.

The exhibition is open until 24 May. For more details, contact the Heathcote Museum and Gallery on 9364 5666.
