Young People Called to YAC It Up!

Published Date: 17 January 2012, 12:00 AM

Young people aged 12 to 25 have been called on to join the City of Melville’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) to help organise music events, get involved with urban art projects and access specialised knowledge and training.

The message comes from the City of Melville’s Community Development Officer (Youth) Callum Prior who said, “It’s not always easy for young people to find enjoyable activities that meet their diverse interests in their local area, but the YAC is an exciting opportunity to work on a variety of great projects.”

“No particular skills are required, only enthusiasm and motivation. The City is also able to organise for a student’s involvement in the YAC to receive accreditation from the Curriculum Council and Department of Education, which earns points towards their Year 12 WACE.”

YAC member Amy Murray said, “I joined because I wanted theatre and drama experience. The YAC is great and I encourage others to join.”

Over the last couple of months, the YAC has had projects and workshops with: Propel Youth Arts - the peak body for young people in the Arts; internationally-renowned public speaking organisation Tedx; the Australian Youth Climate Coalition; as well as its monthly all ages music events.

This year looks to be even bigger with the ongoing monthly public workshops and presentations, the twentyten arts project with Propel and opportunities to receive training in areas young people are passionate about.

Young people aged 12 to 25 wanting more information or to get involved with the YAC can go to: www.melvillecity.com.au/YAC or www.facebook.com/melvilleyac or email yac@melville.wa.gov.au  or call 1300 635 845.
