Willagee Community Centre Gets Garden Makeover

Published Date: 23 November 2010, 12:00 AM

A beautiful, new $10,000 garden at the City of Melville’s Willagee Community Centre has been unveiled today (Tuesday, 23 November).

The impressive garden comes courtesy of a competition win resulting in a garden makeover by Channel 9’s Garden Gurus. The Willagee Community Centre won the major prize in the Community category after submitting a photo of garden club members with a ‘home’ grown sunflower.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the new garden was proving a strong attraction for local community members.

“It’s the City’s wish that the garden become an extension of the community centre, as it further encourages visiting residents to participate in the garden. This makeover has helped us move towards this goal,” he said.

“Gardening is a naturally therapeutic pastime and the community can get involved by either: volunteering in the garden; sitting and relaxing; or helping themselves to the fruit, vegetables and herbs we grow.

“The new garden will really benefit the community, including people with disabilities.”

The garden makeover involved planting a range of fruit trees including: guava, avocado, orange and mandarin. A variety of vegetables, such as pumpkin, capsicum and potatoes, were also planted. Raised garden beds enable people with a disability to participate. The new water tank and mulching create a more sustainable gardening experience.

The Willagee Community Centre garden makeover will appear on Channel 9s Garden Gurus program on Sunday, 5 December at 5.30pm.

For further information on the Willagee Community Centre garden contact City of Melville Acting Neighbourhood Development Officer Craig Stephenson on 9364 0889.
