Watering on Hold for Len Shearer and Shirley Strickland Reserves
Due to water restrictions, the City of Melville has advised residents that water allocations for the Len Shearer Reserve in Booragoon and the Shirley Strickland Reserve in Ardross will not be renewed until Friday, 1 July 2011.
The Department of Water licensing conditions for irrigating the Reserves are very strict because the water comes from artesian ground water, which is very similar to drinking water.
It is expected that the move could result in a browning of the turf on both Reserves, however the City hopes the winter rains and cooler days will help restore the turf over the winter period. In addition, sporting activity has been reduced at the Reserves in order to protect the turf.
The City has reallocated some sports to other grounds to ensure minimal disruption to sporting clubs.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said, “Thanks to a range of water saving initiatives, the City of Melville has Water Wise status with the Department of Water. We want to encourage residents to follow our example by turning off their sprinklers between June and August.
Local residents will notice the ground condition at the Reserves will not look as lush and green as normal. This is nothing to be concerned about and the turf will recover during the winter period.
“The City has proactively contacted all sporting clubs to advise them of the situation and we thank people for their understanding of this matter. The City is reacting responsibly to the unavoidable issue of limited groundwater.”
