Upcoming Exhibition Passes the Taste Test

Anyone with an appetite for art will be able to feast on an upcoming exhibition at the City of Melville’s Heathcote Museum and Gallery.

From 16 November to 20 December, the venue will host “Eating Attitude – Visual Hunger” – the long-awaited and highly anticipated first public solo exhibition for Perth food installation artist Bridget Waters.

Waters, who makes amazing creations that transform food materials into artworks, has prepared an exhibition that explores how food directly affects people’s state of mind.

Curator Soula Veyradier said Waters’ work presented ways of enjoying food other than through consumption. “Waters uses food as if it were any other material such as paint, focusing on the innate qualities of each chosen medium and highlighting its potential,” she said. “The result is stunning food artworks that are both interesting and engaging.”

The exhibition includes a pickled ginger fabric, a beautiful example of Waters’ unconventional spin on textiles. One artwork entitled I’ll be Back in an Hour is dedicated to the artist’s mother who hated cooking and explains how Waters only ever cooked when her mother went out.

Waters’ unique food installations are a culmination of her diverse experiences in art, hospitality, design and floristry. She has taken part in numerous group exhibitions and has run workshops at schools and in the broader community.

In keeping with Waters’ passion for food as art, the “Eating Attitude – Visual Hunger” exhibition will be jointly opened by John Teschendorff and national food critic John Maiorana.

Ms Veyradier said the exhibition was a must-attend event as Waters was bound for international success with invitations to produce artworks in Los Angeles, New York, San Diego and Houston in January 2008.
