UN Young Peoples’ Delegation Visits The Vault

Published Date: 12 July 2010, 12:00 AM

Young people at the City of Melville’s The Vault Youth Space in Booragoon have met with young delegates from the United Nations Youth Conference (UNYC) 2010, to discuss the issues they face and create urban art.

Held in Perth from 4 to 11 July, UNYC 2010 concentrated its theme on Advocating for Change: Empowering Minorities and aimed to educate delegates on the adversity faced by various minority groups in Australia.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the City supported the visit because society did not give young people a platform to express their views.

“Society does not encourage young people to have a voice. The UNYC 2010 is an attempt to address this issue by having young delegates talk to fellow young people and then participate in workshops, listen to speakers’ forums, take part in a mock UN debate, and tackle some of the toughest political and international issues facing our current world leaders,” he said.

“Among the delegates, the process builds confidence, public speaking ability and leadership skills. In addition, City of Melville young people had the opportunity to express their opinions to peers who will then represent their views at a national level.”

During The Vault visit, the UNYC delegates and local young people produced artwork on canvases and blank skate boards with the help of two professional artists. The workshop was also an opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic artwork pieces from previous years and to celebrate PHAZE – the City’s major urban art project for young people.

UNYC Delegate Bodie D’Orazio said the visit helped the delegates to understand the issues that young people face.

“Young people are neglected by decision makers and they may turn to graffiti and crime or become homeless. A place like The Vault offers support and sees young people as valuable citizens,” he said.

Other UNYC visits included: a young Gay and Lesbian group, a wheelchair basketball group and an African group.
