Tune In to MDC and Wireless Hill for Summer Fun
The City of Melville has some good vibrations on offer at its Melville Discovery Centre (MDC) and neighbouring Wireless Hill Telecommunications Museum these school holidays.
From Monday, 11 January to Friday, 15 January 2010, young people will have the chance to join Richard Rennie (formerly of the Fremantle History Museum) at the MDC for intriguing school holidays activities.
Local History Officer Kaylene Poon explained that ‘Good Vibrations’ would involve hearing some amazing sounds such as metal rods that sing, and an antique fog horn. “Children will be able to see the vibrations of their voice on a giant screen, test their hearing and play music on a Theremin, an early electronic musical instrument controlled by antennas which sense the position of the player’s hands. They can also make and take home a Zip-o-Phone (talking card) to keep,” she said.
The sessions – suitable for children aged between eight to 16 – will be on from 10.00am to 11.00am daily at a cost of $6.00 per child to cover materials.
The nearby Wireless Hill Telecommunications Museum will be open after each session from 11.30am to 1.00pm, offering young people the opportunity to learn even more about sound and communication. There is free entry for children who have attended the MDC activity, while normal entry fees apply for others.
Mayor Russell Aubrey encouraged everyone to attend both facilities. “People can visit the museum to learn about: the history of the site, which was the first location for ship-to-shore communication in Perth; the site’s telecommunications history; and its significance to Melville, Australia and the world. Wireless Hill is also a great place for families to visit on the school holidays or weekends, as there is a park and barbecue facilities available,” he said.
The Melville Discovery Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 4.00pm and entry is free. ‘Come and discover where you live’ at the City of Melville’s Civic Centre, 10 Almondbury Road, Booragoon.
Wireless Hill Telecommunications Museum is on Telefunken Drive (extending from Almondbury Road), in Ardross.
Places are limited for ‘Good Vibrations’, so bookings are essential. Contact Local History Officer Kaylene Poon on (08) 9364 0158 or email mdc@melville.wa.gov.au to book.
