Tree Planting Doubles to Create “Emerald City”
The already leafy suburbs of the City of Melville will be significantly greener after a decision to make a 100 per cent increase to the verge tree planting program, was made by Council last night (Tuesday, 21 December 2010).
The commitment will see the number of verge trees planted double, taking the figure from 250 trees to 500 trees each year.
The specification for new trees has also increased from a 45 litre root bag size to a 100 litre root bag size. The larger 100 litre size tree will have an immediate effect on the visual appearance of a street.
City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey described it as a “wise” and “wonderful” decision.
“I commend Council on this wise decision, which people of all ages can enjoy,” he said.
“Trees are an important asset to the community, increasing the visual appearance of suburbs, offering shade, providing food to wildlife and increasing the value of real estate.
“Doubling the number of trees the City plants and increasing the size of the trees are really wonderful decisions which will further enhance the beauty of our suburbs.
“The City is one of the older metropolitan suburbs and its trees are known to attract residents and visitors to the area. In future, it would be lovely if the City of Melville was dubbed the Emerald City.”
The decision will be effective in 2011-2012 with funding for the tree planting program increasing from $186,000 to $370,000 per annum.
Residents who would like to request a verge tree are invited to contact the City of Melville on 1300 635 845. Please note, to create an avenue effect, the Council has a policy of planting one species of tree per street. For more information visit www.melvillecity.com.au
