The Writing’s on the Wall at Bull Creek Library

Published Date: 15 November 2007, 12:00 AM

Aspiring local poets and poetry lovers can contribute to a ‘wall of words’ at Bull Creek Library.

The City of Melville library is inviting local residents and visitors to participate in a week of celebrating poetry, including an opportunity to post their favourite poems on a wall at the library.

The celebrations will begin on Friday, 23 November with the mounting of a display of poems and photos about the Piney Lakes Sculpture Walk, which were developed at a City of Melville-sponsored workshop.

Anyone may then contribute a poem to the wall whether it be their own or someone else’s. Library staff will make the library’s poetry book collection readily available as a source for anyone needing a poem.  Contributions should no larger than A4, clearly written or typed for display and include title and author’s name and date if known.

On Tuesday evening, 27 November, there will be an open-microphone opportunity where people can recite poems, including ones that have been posted on the wall.  Anyone wanting to take part should phone the library in advance on 9364 0150 and/or book a slot on arrival.

Bateman poet Jenny de Garis will start the proceedings at 6.00pm. Under the auspices of WritingWA and the City of Melville, the author will talk about the challenges, delights and stimuli behind her recently self-published book, Dance of Light.  Combining photos and poems, this book was launched at Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre in October.
