The People Have Spoken at 2008 Art Awards
Melville residents have chosen their winner of the 2008 City of Melville Art Awards, awarding Artist Gwen Monteiro the People’s Choice Award for her untitled oil painting.
The first time entrant portrayed a nameless 60’s starlet painted primarily in striking complementary colours of green and red.
Ms Monteiro said the painting helped her to realise what she wanted to do and know where she was going with her art. “I didn’t want to paint anyone in particular; I wanted to paint an unnamed identity, which had her own emotions and story to tell through the painting,” she said. “I specifically stick to painting portraits as I feel they have such a big story to tell.”
The Art Awards were open for the public to view in late June. During the exhibition, visitors were given an opportunity to vote on their favourite piece on display.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the painting was visually striking and a great addition to the exquisite works displayed in the Art Awards. “Ms Monteiro’s untitled work proved to be very popular, receiving about a quarter of the votes,” he said. “Her use of unconventional colours made the painting intriguing to viewers.”
Starting painting at a very young age, Ms Monteiro began to take her painting seriously while at university. After moving to Australia from India six months ago, Ms Monteiro found out about the Art Awards while at a discount art supply store and decided to enter.
Ms Monteiro said she was really excited to be awarded the People’s Choice Award. “It took a little time to sink in; I think my husband was more excited than I was,” she said. “I think it’s great that the City of Melville give artists opportunities like this.”
