The City of Melville invites residents to a new exhibition The Illusion of Control running from Saturday, 28 May 2011 to Friday, 3 July 2011 at the Heathcote Museum and Gallery on Duncraig Road in Applecross.

The Illusion of Control exhibition by artist Anita Haywood features a multimedia reflection on the human condition and our perception of influence.

City of Melville Exhibition Curator Soula Veyradier said, “Through film, photography and painting the artist invites us to consider how much control we have, or think we have, about our lives.”

“Human beings use a variety of ways to control their lives, including ritual and social perception. But how much of that is truly under our conscious control?

“This exhibition invites us to consider notions of control, or lack thereof, both on a universal and a personal level.

“This exhibition is a reflection on the personal and the universal condition of living creatures, including humans which will hopefully encourage visitors to reflect on their own and others stories.”

The artworks are created from: oils, bronze sculptures, DVD films, infrared photographs and sewing machine drawings.

Exhibition artists Anita Haywood said, “We strive throughout our lives. It is the human condition.”

“Racing against time, battling with opponents over various dilemmas, coping with the stresses and strains of every day life - as if we are in ‘free fall’.

“We like to believe that we have control over our lives. But have we? No matter what controls we think we have established, events develop out of our jurisdiction. Even in death, nothing is guaranteed.”

The Illusion of Control exhibition will show at the Heathcote Museum and Gallery from Saturday, 28 May 2011 to Friday, 3 July 2011 on Tuesday to Friday 10.00am to 3.00pm and on Saturday and Sunday 11.00am to 3.00pm at Heathcote Cultural Centre, Swan House, Duncraig Road, Applecross.
