Swimming Superstar Makes a Splash at Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre
Visitors to Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre on Wednesday, 20 February will have a chance to meet swimming personality, former Olympian and dual-gold medallist Kieren Perkins.
From 4.00pm to 5.30pm, the star swimmer will host a swimming clinic for 20 lucky competition winners aged five to 16 years.
Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre was one of six pools across Australia that was chosen to host the 2008 Kieren Perkins Swim Clinic. The program was developed in anticipation of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to help encourage and nurture young athletes.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said it was very exciting to have such an iconic figure such as Kieren Perkins come to the City of Melville. “Being one of only six pools across Australia to be chosen for this program is a great credit to the City of Melville’s aquatic and recreation services,” he said. “It will give us a great opportunity to demonstrate the quality of our health and fitness services, programs and facilities in comparison to other centres throughout Australia,”
Kieren Perkins was one of the world’s best ever long distance swimmers, smashing numerous world records and winning a string of gold medals, including two Olympic gold medals for the 1500m, two World Championship gold medals for the 1500m and the 400m and three Commonwealth Games gold medals for the 200m, 400m and the 1500m.
The lucky participants of the Swim Clinics were selected through a competition run by Hamilton Laboratories – the Official supplier of sunscreen and lip balm to the Australian Olympic Team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics in August.
