The City of Melville has won a road safety award for its hard-hitting portrayal of the consequences of drink-driving in its health resource DVD titled ‘6’.

The DVD, which deals with a range of issues facing young men, won the Safe Road User Behaviour (Metro) category of the Local Government Road Safety Awards, which acknowledge achievements by local government in the area of road safety.

The awards were presented by Police and Emergency Services Minister John Kobelke as part of the 2008 Transport and Roads Conference held in Perth on 6 May.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the award was fantastic acknowledgement of a very ambitious project by a local council. “A lot of work was put into acquiring funding for, and producing the ‘6’ DVD, which features six stories about six young men,” he said. “It is a resource to be used by schools and other organisations to assist young men in coping with some of the emotional health issues they may face during adolescence such as self-esteem, relationships, sexuality, crime, suicide and drink-driving,” he said.

Health Promotions Officer Janet Armarego, who led the project, said the DVD was developed through close collaboration with students from Melville and Applecross senior high schools to make it as relevant and realistic as possible. “Young men are used to seeing 30-second television advertisements about drink-driving where there is no real connection to the characters involved,” she said. “This DVD follows the stories of six young men through six stories so young viewers really get to know the characters and relate to them. The last of the stories deals with drink-driving and shows how an innocent night out can end up in disaster.”

The ‘6’ DVD has been successfully launched in both Perth and Melbourne. Since its release, the City of Melville has sent copies to more than 400 schools and organisations across Australia and New Zealand to be used as health and educational resource.

Mayor Aubrey thanked the WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise Program and the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (WA Division) for initiating the Local Government Road Safety Awards and acknowledging the City of Melville’s ‘6’ DVD. “The City of Melville is committed to making our roads safe for all road users and we will continue to invest in innovative projects that help to achieve this,” he said.
