Students Sow Seeds of Sustainability on Arbor Day

Students across the City of Melville planted trees around their schools as part of Arbor Day on Friday, 6 June 2008.

The City of Melville offered 10 trees to every school in the municipality to plant on Arbor Day, which is held each year to encourage tree planting and care.

Nineteen schools took up the opportunity to plant trees and Deputy Mayor Cr Harvey Everett helped out at Bateman and Bicton primary schools while Cr Rasa Subramaniam lent a hand at Bull Creek Primary.

Cr Everett said supplying trees and plants to local schools was part of the City’s commitment to greening Melville. “Through our community planting program, the City supports community groups, schools and individuals by supplying the plants and having staff participate in local planting days,” he said. “We appreciate the support of dedication of community groups, schools and individuals in helping us to preserve the natural environment and improve habitats for native fauna.”

Cr Everett congratulated the students for showing an interest in the environment and taking the time to plant some trees on Arbor Day. “We encourage everyone to play a part in helping making our City sustainable so it can be enjoyed by future generations,” he said.

Bateman Primary Principal Kristy Malarczyk said the school participated in Arbor Day every year. “For the past five years or so, our students have planted about 300 trees each year to revegetate bushland around the school,” she said. “All the students get involved in a range of environmental programs and planting projects.”
