Step into Spring at Willagee Community Centre

Published Date: 28 August 2008, 04:30 PM

Local residents are encouraged to come out of winter hibernation and take part in the array of activities on offer at Willagee Community Centre.

Run by the City of Melville, Willagee Community Centre has something for everyone, from tiny tots to seniors. The centre has started some inspiring new activities including the latest computer courses for beginners to advanced, a new Gardening Club, Welcome Wednesdays and Foodie Fridays.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the centre, located next to Willagee Library had become a community hub where residents could participate in a vast range of activities. “The centre has come a long way since the City of Melville regained management in 2007,” he said. “Some residents were concerned that activities would be cancelled under the new management but that hasn’t been the case,” Mayor Aubrey said.

Community Development Coordinator Lesley Gilroy said there were still places available in the centre’s computer, mobile telephone and digital camera courses. “Our short courses are low cost with small groups and patient tutors,” she said. “The computer courses have been very popular but the waiting lists are down and more participants are needed to fill future classes.”

Residents are also invited to get down and dirty on the first Tuesday of each month with a keen group of local residents at the Gardening Club and join in on Foodie Fridays where they can watch cooking demonstrations, listen to guest speakers and swap recipes with other cooking enthusiasts.

The centre also hosts a fortnightly talk on Welcome Wednesdays, which are great for people wanting to get out and try something new. “The guest speaker on 17 September will be Carla Vanraay, acclaimed author of God’s Callgirl,” Ms Gilroy said.
