Step Back in Time for International Museums Day

Published Date: 11 May 2011, 11:25 AM

City of Melville residents will have a chance to step back in time with a week of free or low cost events to celebrate International Museums Day (Wednesday, 18 May).

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the week-long calendar would run from Monday, 16 May to Sunday, 23 May.

“The City of Melville is rich in history and it’s a great opportunity for residents to get out and about to discover more about this fantastic area we live in,” he said.

“While there’s something for everyone, these events are particularly amazing activities for parents to enjoy with their children – being educational as well as interactive and inexpensive.

“Knowing about the history of a community and a place helps you appreciate it even more - history shows us where we’ve come from, what values we hold and gives us a direction for the future.”

Since 1977 the International Council of Museums has coordinated International Museums Day to raise awareness about the importance of museums in the development of society. The number of participants is increasing, with almost 30,000 museums getting involved across more than 100 countries.
