Special Screening of Short Films to Promote Reconciliation

Published Date: 13 May 2009, 11:04 AM

The City of Melville and the Walyalup Reconciliation Group are proud to celebrate the upcoming Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June 2009) with a free film night hosted by Noongar Film Director Glen Stasiuk.

Film-goers can join Mr Stasiuk from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Friday, 22 May 2009, to celebrate Reconciliation Week in true local style with a trio of short films. Mr Stasiuk will personally introduce his films, which are based on Western Australian people and events.

Community Development Officer (Aboriginal Liaison) Gail Beck said The Forgotten (2004) was an acclaimed documentary of Aboriginal servicemen and women. “The Forgotten contrasts the experiences of comradeship and equality within war service units, with the social reality back in Australia,” she said. “This film shows a journey towards recognition, while Gnulla Katitjin Quoppadar Boodjar – Our Understanding of Beautiful Country (2008) portrays Noongar knowledge and is a celebration of country. Footprints in the Sand (2006), the third short film in the trio, is a symbolic journey into the traditional heartland of the Gibson Desert in a story of love for family, country and culture.”

Mayor Russell Aubrey said there was always much to be learnt from different cultures. “Reconciliation Week offers locals in the City of Melville, and people across Australia alike, an opportunity to hear about the culture and history of Australia’s indigenous people,” he said. “This is a week of celebration where we can acknowledge our past, facilitate understanding among communities and work towards a better relationship with each other for the future.”

Bookings for the free film night are encouraged as there are limited seats. The screening will be held at the City of Melville Civic Centre Conference Room, second floor, Almondbury Rd, Booragoon and will be followed by a discussion over light refreshments.
