Seniors Go Wild Over City of Melville Grant
Local seniors will be able to get active and have some fun after the City of Melville received a $20,000 grant from the Department of Local Government and Regional Development.
The City is using the Active Ageing at a Local Level grant to host a Go Wild in Bull Creek Active Ageing Expo from 30 September to 2 October 2008, which will feature a range of stimulating social and physical activities specifically designed for older residents.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the expo project was developed from some of the outcomes of the Age-Friendly Melville Strategy – Directions for Seniors. “The strategy, which was adopted in late 2007, aims to make Melville an age-friendly city by promoting active ageing, removing and preventing barriers that people encounter as they grow older and ensuring policies, services and structures are designed to support and enable seniors to age actively,” he said. “It is part of our commitment to addressing the needs of the City’s ageing population.”
Acting Strategic Community Development Director Christine Young said the Bull Creek expo would address issues such as social inclusion, communication and information and social participation and create partnerships between local community groups and organisations. “Activities will include everything from line dancing to life ball and digital photography to clay pigeon shooting,” she said. “The Bull Creek expo follows on from the Go Wild in Willagee event we held in May for seniors in the south-west neighbourhood of the City. Seniors had a great time in Willagee and we are improving the program to make the Bull Creek expo even better.”
Copies of the Bull Creek expo program will soon be posted on the City of Melville website and be available from local libraries, recreation centres, community centres, the Garden City Community Information Centre and at the Melville Civic Centre reception.
