Seniors Go Wild Over City of Melville Grant

Published Date: 23 April 2008, 12:00 AM

Local seniors will be able to get active and have some fun after the City of Melville received a $20,000 grant from the Department of Local Government and Regional Development.

The City is using the Active Ageing at a Local Level grant to host a Go Wild in Willagee Active Ageing Expo from 13 to 16 May 2008, which will feature a range of social and physical activities specifically designed for older residents.

The expo is a pilot project aimed at residents in the City’s south-west neighbourhood (Willagee, Winthrop, Kardinya and Murdoch) with activities being held at Willagee Community Centre, Willagee Library, Southern Districts Senior Citizens Centre, Weeronga Village and Winnacott Oval.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the expo project was developed from some of the outcomes of the Age-Friendly Melville – Directions for Seniors Strategy.  “The strategy, which was adopted in late 2007, aims to make Melville an age-friendly city by promoting active ageing, removing and preventing barriers that people encounter as they grow older and ensuring policies, services and structures are designed to support and enable seniors to age actively,” he said. “It is part of our commitment to addressing the needs of the City’s ageing population.”

Acting Community Development Manager Leeann Reid said the Willagee expo would address issues such as social inclusion, communication and information and social participation and create partnerships between local community groups and organisations. “Activities will include everything from a brain gym and friendship morning to badminton, croquet and sing-a-longs,” she said. “Depending on the success of the Go Wild at Willagee Active Ageing Expo, a further expo will be held in the south-east neighbourhood (Bull Creek, Bateman and Leeming) later in the year.”

Copies of the Willagee expo program will soon be posted on the City of Melville website and in libraries, recreation centres, community centres, the Garden City Community Information Centre and at the Melville Civic Centre reception.
