Scene Is Set For Sculpture Walk 2009
City of Melville residents and visitors will have an opportunity to see a variety of sculptural and ephemeral works created by local artists at Sculpture Walk 2009, which will be officially opened on Friday, 13 March 2009 at 6.00pm.
Sculpture Walk 2009, which will be on show until Sunday, 12 April, is a City of Melville initiative that aims to acknowledge and encourage both emerging and professional Western Australian sculptors.
The free sculptural showcase will include works by 18 Western Australian artists who have considered the site’s shape, history, imagined potential, function and human interactions, to create sculptures that are specific to the Piney Lakes location in Winthrop. The works have been temporarily installed at the Sensory Play Park in Piney Lakes Reserve, so they can be enjoyed among the picturesque parkland they were designed for.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said Sculpture Walk continued to gain admirers and had become a major attraction of Piney Lakes. “The local artists have put together some fantastic, unique works for this year’s exhibition,” he said. “I encourage everyone to come down and take a stroll through the scenic parkland to enjoy these sculptures; it’s a great chance to see art and nature working together.”
Community Development Officer (Arts) Hannah Katarski said the Sculpture Walk provided a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to see Piney Lakes Reserve from both environmental and imaginative perspectives. “There is an exciting range of artwork on display this year, with works ranging from the small and ephemeral to artwork made from steel,” she said. “It’s a great chance to see artistic pieces in a natural environment where the artists have used the site to stimulate, create interest and generate discussion in their works.”
Parking is available and the venue is wheelchair-accessible, with public toilets nearby. Several of the works on display during the exhibition are for sale. For further information contact the City of Melville on 1300 635 845 or email melinfo@melville.wa.gov.au.
