Safety and Speed Paramount for Leeming Recreation Centre Redevelopment

Published Date: 27 March 2008, 12:00 AM

Leeming Recreation Centre will temporarily close its doors during the $8.1 million redevelopment of the facility to ensure the safety of users and staff and allow the construction to be completed quicker.

Following consultation with the project architects, the City of Melville has decided that full closure is the best option to give builders full access to the site allowing them to complete the work sooner and make sure patrons and employees are not put at risk.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the City had considered closing just sections of the centre, however, the benefits of full closure outweighed the short-term suspension of recreation services at Leeming. “By closing the centre entirely and allowing building contractors full access, the architects have indicated there would be a reduced construction time of three to four months,” he said. “Additionally, the complexity of the redevelopment and the open-plan nature of the facility would create a relatively high risk environment for patrons and staff, including dust and noise issues. The City believes safety is paramount when proceeding with this redevelopment.”

Leeming Recreation Centre is likely to be closed from mid-July (after the end of Term 2) so the City can remove equipment and arrange storage in preparation for construction works to begin in September. The scheduled completion date for the redevelopment is July 2009. During the construction, Leeming Senior High School will still have access to the performing arts theatre, staff office and reserve change rooms, which have external access and can be closed off from the rest of the centre.

Health and Lifestyle Services Manager Todd Cahoon said centre users, staff and the wider community were being fully informed of the closure. “The majority of the services and programs at Leeming will be able to be accommodated at Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre and Melville Recreation Centre,” he said. “It is also anticipated most, if not all, staff will be relocated to the other two centres during the closure,” he said.

Mr Cahoon said it was inevitable that some classes and groups would have to be postponed during the construction phase. “We apologise for any inconvenience the redevelopment may cause but are sure the community understands the need for safety and speed during the construction phase,” he said. “Additionally, any staff who cannot be accommodated at our other centres will be able to return to their old positions once Leeming Recreation Centre re-opens.”

Mayor Aubrey said the redevelopment, which was approved following extensive community consultation and discussion, would turn the centre into a modern facility that meets community and stakeholder expectations while making it more economically viable. “It is estimated that the redevelopment will increase patronage to the centre by 63,000 people per year and reduce the financial deficit,” he said.

The project includes redeveloping the aquatic facility to a 25m warm water program pool to cater for swimming lessons and hydrotherapy as well as constructing a children’s interactive play area. The gymnasium and circuit room will be improved and relocated downstairs while an extended group fitness area will be moved to the former gym area on the mezzanine floor. There will also be a general refurbishment of facilities, including a substantial upgrade to the change rooms.

The City of Melville will keep the community, centre users and stakeholders informed of developments during the construction phase through displays, newsletters and the media.

class timetables

Will the timetables at the Melville centres be altered to accommodate for the classes regularly on at the Leeming centre?

If not, are membership refunds available? For those who live in Leeming, it is quite far to travel to get to the Melville centres.

yes timetables at both the meville centres will increase to account for the loss of leeming classes and RPM will be moved across to these centres, unfortunately there is not another venue closer to leeming in the city of melville other than melville rec and melville aquatic (as Leeming its self sits on the far corner of the city of melville on the border of both the city of cockburn and canningvale). And think all of you can agree that this is something Leeming has needed for some time now.

For those who will find it difficult to get to the Melville Centres, could not another venue be made available closer to Leeming?

Leeming Rec Closure

Posted by Lesley Boyes at 01 April 2008, 07:52 AM
Will memberships be able to be terminated, for those Leeming residents who have recently signed up for a year. Especially when no mention was made upon joining of any closures or disruptions to classes.

What about those people who have recently taken out a year's membership with the intention of utilising the Leeming Centre. Will you be able to terminate membership, especially since no mention whatsoever was made about the intention to close the Leeming centre when I took out membership.

I would just like to ask why I found out about the closure of the centre through my local newspaper?

Water Temp for 25m Pool

Posted by Sarah Mackenzie at 05 May 2008, 08:06 AM
Just wondering what the water temperature will be for the new 25 metre pool?

It has been described as a 'warm pool'. How warm exactly?

Will it be suitable for lap swimming? Will it be warmer than it is now?

pool temp

I had the exact query and spoke to one of the life guards there. Fromwhat i understand there will be a hydortherapy pool there which will be a lot warmer (about 35C) than the current pool which is 32C. this will be good for people doing rehab and water walking and the warm lap pool will be about what it is now, purely because if they make it any warmer it will be too hot for lap swimmers and when they swim a number of laps they will overheat due to the high water temp. So now you have a choice of two temps depending on how you like it, or for the serious swimmers there is the melville 50m pool which is 26 or 27 i cant remember. So it will definatey be at the warmer end which suits me just fine

Weekday Gym Opening Times

Does anyone know of any other gym's in the Leeming, Melville or Perth CBD areas
that open at 5:30am on weekdays? Leeming Rec Centre is the only one I am
aware of, and it's going to be a setback to all the early morning before
work gym users like myself when the rec centre closes for 12 months.

the gym at Melville aquatic opens at 5.30am on weekdays the same as leeming and the gym at Melville Rec opens at 6pm however this may change to allow for the Leeming closure, and if you are already a member at Leeming were membership is valid at both the melville aquatic and mevlille rec centres
