Safety and Sirens A Spectacular Success
More than 100 children and parents enjoyed the popular City of Melville’s Safety and Sirens free, school holiday event held on Wednesday, 11 January 2012 at both the Civic Centre and Willagee Libraries, attended by WA Police, Fire and Emergency Services and emergency services vehicles.
City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said, "Police Officers gave demonstrations of the equipment which they use and provided safety information on stranger danger, bicycle safety and how to use the 000 emergency number. They also distributed stickers and colouring-in pages to the children."
"The Fire Fighters were also very popular and demonstrated how to escape from a burning building and showed the children how the fire truck works, including the lights, sirens and fire hose. Children were also invited to sit inside the trucks and many had photos taken with the vehicles and Fire Fighters."
Mother Naomi Braine said, "My daughter Amalie loves Fireman Sam and really enjoyed the event."
"The drop, cover and roll message was really emphasised, as well as the 000 emergency number, which is important for young children to learn."
The Mayor added, "The City received excellent feedback from parents about this year’s event and looks forward to finding innovative new ways to help teach children about vital safety messages."
"Safety and Sirens demonstrates the City’s commitment to achieving the residents’ goal of a Safer Melville as it works as an early intervention tool to help educate young people and build relationships between kids and emergency services. It’s an interactive learning program that equips children with the skills to keep safe."
During the event, Neighbourhood Watch Volunteer Connie Benson held a crime prevention stall where she distributed information to adults, and balloons and erasers to children.
