Residents’ Perceptions of Melville

Results of an independent study of resident and business perceptions about the City of Melville have been announced, placing the City fifth out of 16 local governments and setting eight residential as well as six business industry standards.

The ‘Community and Business Perception Survey’ evaluates perceptions of the local services, infrastructure and facilities and is now carried out every two years by CATALYSE Pty Ltd, and this year involved 400 residents and 101 businesses.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the 2010 Survey showed an overall 82 per cent of residents were satisfied with the City and its services, including 43 per cent who were delighted.

“Compared with 16 other local governments the City had the highest satisfaction scores among residents in the areas of housing density and design, street lighting, footpaths and cycle ways, education and training opportunities, library and information services, graffiti removal services, conservation and environmental management and local shopping area,” he said.

“Among the business community, the City also set six industry standards in the areas of waste collection services, enforcement of local laws relating to food, health, noise and emissions, street lighting, safety and security, graffiti removal, and how the business community is consulted.

“Interestingly, while the City set an industry standard in how it consults the business community, it was also noted as an area for improvement.”

Mayor Aubrey said the Perceptions Survey was a key tool for the City to identify areas for improvement as its residents grow and evolve and to benchmark itself against other local governments.

“While stand-out performers were rubbish collections, library and information services and local shopping centres, residents asked the City to focus on how it consults and keeps the community informed about local issues, and how it deals with traffic management issues,” he said.

“The business community asked the City to focus on parking in commercial areas, traffic management and control, how businesses are consulted and informed about local issues, and how commercial centres are being developed.

“Those areas highlighted for improvement have now been identified within annual business plans with strategies being implemented to address them.”
