Residents Warned of Illegal Pruning in City
The City of Melville seeks to warn residents that unauthorised contractors have been approaching residents within the municipality claiming to be endorsed by the City to prune or remove street trees from verges.
The unauthorised contractors are believed to have been operating in the suburbs of Bicton, Attadale and Ardross.
Street trees are City assets and – as such – pruning is only to be undertaken by authorised officers or contractors engaged by the City of Melville.
Acting Chief Executive Officer Christine Young said it was very concerning that street trees were being pruned without lawful authority by an organisation that had not sought the City’s approval. “Unlawful pruning of a verge tree is an offence and on prosecution may attract a penalty of a fine of $1,000. This practice is also of concern as residents are allegedly paying upfront to the contractor for this unauthorised service,” she said.
“It is believed there are two nominated companies conducting unauthorised pruning throughout the City of Melville. These companies are allegedly working in vehicles without displaying company logos, and charging residents prior to conducting work. The City has notified the appropriate authorities and is currently undertaking preliminary investigations. Residents are reminded to always ask for identification and to call the City on 1300 635 845 or the police if they have any doubts or concerns,” she said.
