Residents Turn Out in Force for City’s Home Safety Session
More than 100 residents have attended a Home Safety Session, organised by the City of Melville and held at the Civic Centre in Booragoon.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the significant turnout reflected the high importance City of Melville residents placed on crime and safety.
“I am delighted that so many people demonstrated their interest in protecting both themselves and their homes,” he said.
“It is also very positive that local stakeholders came together to deliver this information and help our residents be prepared. The event was another step forward in achieving a Safer Melville.”
At the meeting, Palmyra Police Station’s Sergeant Bernie Hush discussed the safety check list produced by the City of Melville and Executive Manager of WA Police Mike Coe presented the group with examples of Designing Out Crime principles. In addition, the City of Melville’s Community Safety Service (CSS) Business Manager Ashok Mehra explained how the service promoted home safety.
After the event, Sergeant Hush praised the Home Safety Session and reported that crime statistics collated at Palmyra Police Station were improving.
“Palmyra Police Station has recorded that burglaries have dropped 68.3 per cent over a five year period” he said.
“In addition, motor vehicle theft reports at Palmyra Police Station have dropped 76.9 per cent over the same five year reporting period.”
Feedback from evaluation forms completed at the Home Safety Session indicated the attendees found the information relevant and useful. There was also strong interest in attending more sessions on safety and crime prevention topics.
All attendees received a home safety pack including a mini LED metal torch, the City’s Safety and Security booklet, a Designing Out Crime checklist and other safety information.
