Residents Invited to Learn MORE at Community AGM

Published Date: 09 September 2008, 01:35 PM

City of Melville residents are invited to attend the second MORE Community Group annual general meeting at the former Melville Primary School library building on Sunday, 28 September at 1:00pm.

Local residents are encouraged to attend the meeting to voice any ideas on how the MORE Community Group should use the centre and join Professor Neil Drew from the University Notre Dame Australia in his presentation of ‘Building Community Spirit through Principled Practice’. All MORE committee positions will also be open for nomination.

MORE member Nicola Churchill said the MORE Community Group was established six years ago by a community oriented group of residents who fought hard to retain the site for community use. “The community development group is now aiming to make the learning centre into a community hub for public use,” she said. “The centre will be a community focal point, available for groups such as playgroups, youth clubs, cultural groups and community meetings.”

The City purchased the Melville Primary School site from the State Government in 2006 to ensure it was retained for community use. In collaboration with the City, the MORE Community Group has been given the keys to the former library building and is working towards creating a community learning centre.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the development of the former Melville Primary Site was an exciting, long-term project for the City of Melville. “It has been long awaited by the community and will deliver much needed community space,” he said. “The development, once complete, will create an accessible and safe venue for the local community and a significant landmark for the entire City of Melville.”

The Melville Community Learning Centre is located at the MT Williamson building at the former Melville Primary School site, corner of Kitchener and Curtis roads, Melville.
