Residents Encouraged to Keep a Watchful Eye on Neighbours

City of Melville residents are being encouraged to help make their community safer by getting to know their neighbours as part of the City’s Neighbourhood Watch Program.

The City is holding a Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Community Information Evening on Wednesday, 16 July from 6.00pm to 7.30pm to inform residents of the benefits of being involved with NHW as well as current crime prevention strategies and community focused initiatives.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the Neighbourhood Watch program aimed to make individuals aware of crime prevention initiatives and activities within their community. “The Neighbourhood Watch program is about encouraging interaction and instilling a sense of responsibility,” he said. “The program promotes a positive community message of neighbours helping neighbours and also establishes a sense of security among community members.”

The Office of Crime Prevention is working closely with local government agencies, the police and communities in an attempt to reduce the number of burglaries across the State. Programs such as Burglar Beware have several community based elements such as Cocooning and the Dob-in-a-Burglar program in which NHW volunteer participation is crucial.

Community Safety Crime Prevention Coordinator, Kolina Brennan said the information evening was one of many ways the City was trying to raise the awareness of the importance of programs such as Neighbourhood Watch. “The City has a NHW trailer, complete with two gas barbecues, cooking equipment and utensils, which it lends free of charge for local community events,” she said. “The trailer is designed for use at local barbecues to encourage neighbour interaction which is an essential part of the NHW program.”
