Project Encourages Melville Youth to Stand Up and Speak Out
Enthusiastic and vocal Melville youth, aged 12 to 25, are being encouraged to stand up and speak out on a range of issues as part of the City of Melville’s Youth Consultation Project.
The youth-focused project, which is set to begin in April 2008, will bring together a team of young people to gather information that will shape the direction of the City’s youth development team and the activities and projects of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC).
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the project aimed to find out what affects the lives of young people in the City of Melville. “The project looks at what services, projects and activities Melville youth are interested in,” he said. “It also gives them an opportunity to have a voice and express their thoughts on a range of different topics.”
A range of innovative consultation methods will be employed by the youth research team to consult with young people about their personal experiences, needs, perceptions and opinions.
As well as focusing on engaging, empowering and encouraging participation among Melville youth the project also involves other key stakeholders such as parents, teachers and community members.
Community Development Officer – Youth, Jo McKay said the program would engage and train a group of young people in effective research methods. “They are involved in every aspect of the project, including planning, designing and implementing the project from beginning to end,” she said. “The project will give these young people an opportunity to take part in informed decision making and consultation.”
