Poesis Exhibition Explores the Nature of Painting
A new City of Melville art exhibition, Poesis, will showcase the work of four artists and explore the qualities inherent in painting when it opens at Heathcote Museum and Gallery on Friday, 4 June, running until Sunday, 11 July.
The exhibition will highlight the work of recent Curtin University art school graduates: Serena Aristei (Quinns Rock), Margaret Baker (Fremantle), Melanie Diss (Swan Valley) and Melody Smith (Shelley).
City of Melville Curator Soula Veyradier said the City was very pleased to support the artists.
“Poesis provides emerging artists with the opportunity to exhibit professionally and at the same time, it gives the community the opportunity to view local work,” she said.
“The exhibition will include: paintings on canvas; board and non-traditional fabrics; installations; small sculptural works; and jewellery pieces ornamented with miniature paintings.
“Paint as a medium is infinitely versatile - it’s physical possibilities are immense and the use of it to create meaning, limitless. Through the process of layering, both physically and conceptually, Poesis will explore various aspects of paint and painting.
“The exhibition will be thought-provoking and beautiful - examining not only what paint is but also what paint does.”
Poesis will open at Heathcote Museum and Gallery, Swan House, 58-60 Duncraig Road Applecross on Friday, 4 June at 6.00pm and run until Sunday, 11 July. To attend the opening night or for further information contact 9364 0155.
Artist biographies
Serena Aristei’s work is a play on the use of figurative painting throughout art history. Recreating sections of classic representational paintings on new and recycled jewellery pieces, she forms a link between an illusion of the figure and the intimate accessories worn close to our bodies.
Margaret Baker works within a restricted palette to deconstruct Western constructs of Australian history and create alternate stories. The multiple meanings of 'white' paint are explored through layers of gloss and matte oil paint on canvas.
Melanie Diss works with pastel-coloured acrylic house paints and fabric, creating multi-layered textured surfaces hinting at the painted walls within our homes and the history of renovation and repair.
Melody Smith has travelled extensively collecting fabrics and curios. Her practice revolves around the process of collecting discarded materials and objects and re-contextualising the items for a new purpose. Ms Smith’s painting explores themes of intimacy and memory.
