Piney Lakes Sets Scene for Sculpture Walk
Residents will have an opportunity to see the outstanding work of 16 professional sculptors from around WA at the 2008 City of Melville Sculpture Walk, which will be officially opened on Friday, 14 March 2008, at 6.00pm.
The site specific sculptures, which will be on exhibition until Thursday, 10 April, draw their inspiration and uniqueness from their surroundings at Piney Lake Reserve, Winthrop.
Mayor Russell Aubrey, who will officially open the exhibition, said the Sculpture Walk continued to gain growing admirers and had become a major feature of Piney Lakes. “This year we have pieces from 16 extraordinary Western Australian artists that enhance the natural and cultural heritage of Piney Lakes,” he said. “We have some great new pieces and I encourage everyone to come down and have a look.”
The City of Melville Sculpture Walk was introduced in March 2004 as part of the Festival of Melville. The Sculpture Walk aims to acknowledge and encourage both emerging and professional Western Australian sculptors.
Community Development Officer – Arts, Hannah Katarski said the new works for 2008 would delight audiences. “There is an exciting range of artwork on display this year, with works ranging from the small and ephemeral to works made from steel and concrete,” she said. “There is a recurring theme this year with many of the artists wanting to reflect on the importance of their surroundings, environment and relationships.”
The event provides an opportunity for professional Western Australian sculptors to exhibit their work in a natural environment and interpret the site to stimulate, create interest and generate discussion.
All new works on display during the exhibition are for sale. Interested parties can contact the City of Melville on 9364 0666 or visit www.melvillecity.com.au for more information.
