Photos Give Voice to Local Culture

Published Date: 17 November 2010, 12:00 AM

The winners of a City of Melville photographic competition, designed to celebrate and document local culture, have been announced today (Wednesday, 17 November).

Entrants in Photo Voice answered the question ‘What is special in your community?’ with photographic entries and captions.

City of Melville Cultural Development Officer (Arts) Hannah Katarski said it was challenging to select winners from the more than 60 entries.

“While judges took the aesthetic quality of the images into consideration, they were most interested in the meaning and the message the photos conveyed,” she said.

“The competition was an opportunity for residents to have their say about culture and what’s important to them in their community. The information will help form the City’s first Cultural Vitality Plan to guide decisions around art, cultural services and activities for the next three years.”

The winner of the Photo Voice adult photographic section was Pat Darby with “Spirit” and the winner of the youth photographic section was Alex Patching with “Skateboard Chill”. Special mentions went to Vil Mistry (adult category) for “Active Bodies, Active Minds” and Rowena Cunningham (youth category) for “The Neighbours”. The two winners each received a prize of $250 and the special mentions were each awarded a $50 shopping voucher.

All of the photographs will be on display during office hours until Friday, 3 December in the City of Melville Civic Centre foyer, 10 Almondbury Road, Booragoon. The exhibition will also be shown at the Limestone Concert on Sunday, 21 November and the Jacaranda Festival on Saturday, 27 November.

The City of Melville Cultural Vitality Plan will be launched to the community in 2011.

For more information on the Cultural Vitality Plan call 1300 635 845 or go to www.melvillecity.com.au to see the winning photographs.

recent Photo Comp

Hi Hannah ... I have just returned home after viewing the final Photos in the recent City of melville Photo Competion .

It seemed a disappointing amount of photo's to view .

The exhibit was very cramped and it was hard to enjoy each photo on its merit .

Who was the designated Judge and there were no comments on the winner/s entry . Some Entrants had no comment

Age Catogories would have been interesting . A larger viewing area for the photos would have been easier for the eye

Will there be more of these Competions and more advertising of same .

Thank you for exhibiting my 3 photos .Photos were taken on a VERY unsophisticated camera ... Camera makes on each Photo entrant could have been objective

Regards ..Lesley Hartmann

Thanks for your comments

Hi Lesley and thanks for your comments.
We received over 60 entries for this community focused event. Judging was completed by a panel comprising; Community Development Coordinator, A/Manager Community Services, Community Development OPfficer(Arts) and Youth Engagement Officers. As the focus was on participation, we didn't feel that comments from the judges were appropriate. We included titles and captions where possible. Unfortunately not all images were submitted with captions and titles.

This activity was designed to be accessible to the whole community, regardless of camera equipment or IT skills. For this reason judging was centred on the meaning behind the photo, rather than the more technical aspects of photography.

This is one of a number of small scale activities we have hosted as part of our Cultural Vitality Planning.
If you would like to be involved in a larger exhibition, I encourage you to enter the 2011 Melville Art Awards. There is a dedicated photography catergory with entry forms available in February next year.
