Photo Competition for Young People a Snap!

Published Date: 12 January 2012, 12:00 AM

With a chance to win a digital camera or an iPad2, local primary and secondary school students are invited to enter the City of Melville’s creative photographic competition Snap Your City.

As well as the prize opportunities, all entries will provide valuable input into the future direction of the City as part of the review of the Strategic Community Plan: People, Places and Participation.

The competition asks for two photos: what the photographer loves about the City of Melville and what they would like improved in the City of Melville.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said, "By submitting their photos to Snap Your City, young people can tell us what they love about the City of Melville and what they would like improved.

"The photos will be used to inform the City’s Strategic Community Plan which outlines the City’s vision and priorities including areas for action; planning and service delivery; and budgets for government agencies, local community groups and other stakeholder groups.

"The submitted photos will be published in an online gallery and may be published in the Plan, accompanying DVD or bi-monthly newsletter Mosaic.

"The City recognises that young people represent the future of this area and that they live in a very visual and digital age, enjoying music videos, the internet and smart phones.

"Nowadays many young people have a camera on their phone so we wanted to create a photographic competition because we knew it would appeal to the ‘visual intelligence’ of young people."

Snap Your City is a competition for primary and secondary school students living or studying in the City of Melville. Photographic entries in Snap Your City will be judged on the areas of creativity, composition and the accompanying description by a panel consisting of members of the City of Melville’s Youth Advisory Committee and City officers.

The best primary school and secondary school student entries will each win a digital camera and the primary and secondary schools with the highest number of photographic entries in Snap Your City will each win an iPad2.

The competition is now open and closes at 5.00pm on Wednesday, 29 February 2012. Please refer to the website for conditions of entry.
