The winner of the People’s Choice category in the City of Melville Art Awards is Lana Stockton.

Ms Stockton’s winning entry in both the People’s Choice and Youth categories is The Rose, a painting inspired by a photograph of a rose-covered mannequin at Macys Department store in New York City.

The artist competed against 280 entries to take out the $1,000 prize and said she was surprised to win the popular vote.

“It’s really nice to know that people like your work. I will definitely enter next year’s awards,” she said.

The judges applauded The Rose as ‘ambitious’ in both scale and subject matter, with a ‘strong use of paint to model the figure.’

Ms Stockton, who is studying a double degree in Communications and Cultural Studies and Art at Curtin University of Technology, believes she is improving her skills with each painting.

The artist’s next ambition is to create paintings from photographs of Thai people and their rural environments.

“I would also like to experiment with digital art, using a drawing tablet on a laptop,” she said.

The City of Melville Art Awards exhibition ran from Friday, 28 May to Saturday, 5 June 2010.
