The winner of the City of Melville Art Awards 2011 People’s Choice Award has been announced today (Monday, 13 June 2011) as Artist Chris Martin with his pastel entitled Willie Creek Broome.

The People’s Choice Award is voted for by visitors to the City of Melville Art Awards exhibition and is a coveted prize. Mr Martin has been awarded a cheque for $1000.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the work depicted a serene pearl farm in Broome.

“The artwork shows a land inlet connected to the ocean. It is a beautiful, restful scene and an excellent selection for the People’s Choice Award,” he said.

“I commend Chris Martin on his fantastic win and I thank those members of the public who voted for this award.”

Mr Martin said he set out to capture the atmosphere of the pearl farm.

“The artwork is a memory and a feeling of a place,” he said.

“I am nothing short of surprised to win as I didn’t think I stood a chance. Obviously enough people took notice of my artwork.”

This is the third time Mr Martin has entered the City of Melville Art Awards. He has previously won a Highly Commended certificate and the Pastel Category.

An online gallery of the City’s art collection is now available at www.melvillecity.com.au/arts.
