Published Date: 11 January 2010, 12:00 AM

City of Melville residents are encouraged to celebrate community spirit by attending the City’s 2010 Australia Day Awards Breakfast at John Creaney Reserve in Bull Creek. The ceremony is held in conjunction with the Lions Club of Bull Creek – which has consistently provided valuable support to this event.

The day will kick-off with breakfast from 8.30am, a flag-raising ceremony by the Bull Creek-Leeming Scouts at 9.00am (with the Guard of Honour Inspection by Mayor Russell Aubrey), a citizenship ceremony from 9.15am and the Australia Day Awards presentation starting about 9.40am. Other event highlights are to include face-painting and this year, the Capella West Ladies Choir will perform from 10.15am.

Attendees will include numerous dignitaries, the Leeming Band, and local Scouts and Girl Guides groups. The Lions Club will be collecting gold coin donations, with money raised going towards the Leeming Band, Scouts, Girl Guides and the SES.

The City’s residents were previously invited to nominate an individual, community group or event which had provided outstanding service or made a notable contribution to the local community for the awards – held in conjunction with the Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards 2010.

There are three categories, being: Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award; Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for a person under 25 (as at 26 January 2010); and Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for a community group or event.

On Australia Day 2009, the City recognised Leeming resident Margaret Kingsbury as 2009 Citizen of the Year for her passionate commitment to community work, especially in the environment sector. The MORE Community Group was also acknowledged as 2009 Community Group of the Year for working with the City to support the purchase of the old Melville Primary School site for public open space.

Deputy Mayor Rasa Subramaniam said the awards were presented to acknowledge achievements by individuals and community groups who had made an outstanding contribution to the community, thereby making our City a great place to live, work and play. “As well as publicly acknowledging remarkable citizens and groups for their work and generosity, the City looks forward to welcoming new Australians and celebrating the ‘Aussie spirit’ on this special day,” he said.

The City of Melville will donate $400* to each of the winners of the City of Melville Australia Day Awards and $100* to the three individuals who nominated the successful candidates.
