Park Receives Water Wise Redevelopment
The City of Melville continues its water wise reputation with the redevelopment of the John Parlton Park in Mount Pleasant.
The 10-week redevelopment, completed this month, is the latest in a series of public open space upgrades throughout the City of Melville that embrace new advancements in water sensitive landscaping design.
Mayor Katherine Jackson said the new John Parlton Park was an environmentally and economically friendly option for the City. “The City of Melville is actively minimising water, fertiliser and maintenance requirements while at the same time maximising quality and useability of our local parks,” she said.
The redevelopment was designed and constructed following water sensitive guidelines and incorporates the aesthetic use of hard stand and concrete in larger areas to reduce the need for watering and allow space for cyclists.
A new drought-tolerant lawn species, Zyosia Empress, was laid together with a strategically designed reticulation system, which will result in substantially less water usage while still retaining a green and pleasant environment.
Acting Technical and Development Services Director John Cameron said the new John Parlton Park incorporated water wise options into every aspect of its design. “The new gardens are made up of water wise plant species, predominantly local natives that will be watered by a dripping irrigation system, creating habitat for local fauna,” he said. “The park also has new, modern and safe play equipment, drinking fountains and seating.”
John Parlton Park is on the corner of Queens Road and Reynolds Road, Mount Pleasant.
