New Wheels to Access Water at Melville Aquatic
People who have difficulty walking will now find it easier to get around Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre thanks to a new aquatic wheelchair.
The wheelchair, donated by the Melville AUSSI Masters Swim Club, will allow people requiring a wheelchair to access the pools, gym, change rooms and other facilities independently and safely.
The club recently presented the $1500 wheelchair, which features a water-proof stainless steel design, solid tyres and adjustable height and footrests, to City of Melville Community Development Manager Christine Young.
Ms Young said the City welcomed and appreciated the donation. “The aquatic wheelchair further helps us to achieve our goal of making sure all people have access to a range of opportunities and activities in the City,” she said. “We are committed to ensuring our services and facilities are accessible to everyone and that people with disabilities have more opportunities to take part in programs, events and decision making. We recently won a State award for our initiatives to improve access and inclusion for all people in the municipality.”
The Melville AUSSI Masters Swim Club raised the funds to buy the wheelchair from its annual BBB (Bicton to Bridges and Back) river swim sponsored by Resolve Financial Solutions.
Club president Noela Medcalf said the club had used the centre’s facilities for the past 30 years and wanted to give something back. “Our vice-president Larissa Hoskins, who is an amputee, made us aware that there was a need for a proper aquatic wheelchair at the centre,” she said. “The old wheelchairs didn’t have push rims so users weren’t able to propel themselves and had to rely on somebody to push them.”
The Melville AUSSI Masters Swimming Club aims to encourage adults, regardless of age or ability, to swim regularly for fitness, friendship and fun. For membership enquiries, phone Cath Devereaux on 6250 0407.
