New Retic to Benefit Environment and Golfers
A new reticulation system set to help improve water distribution is to be installed at Point Walter Golf Course, resulting in numerous benefits for the environment and golfers’ amenity.
To enable the system upgrade to go ahead, the course will need to be closed for four weeks from mid-November to mid-December.
The Point Walter Irrigation Project has received $90,000 funding from the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.*
Chief Executive Officer Dr Shayne Silcox said, although Belgravia Leisure managed Point Walter Golf Course, the City of Melville was responsible for its maintenance. “The course is due for this upgrade, which will bring many benefits, including water savings, and the ability to reticulate programmed areas only. The new system is an intelligent water system with the potential to be connected to a weather station. It will allow better distribution of irrigation, and conserve water,” he said.
“The City of Melville needs to comply with groundwater restrictions as stipulated by the Department of Water – which has taken a no-tolerance approach to the breaching of licence conditions. We have specific water allocations and therefore need to be resourceful in how we use water. This also fits with the ethos of the City’s water conservation plan,” he said.
Acting Centre Manager Wade Bambling said the new system would provide a better-quality playing surface for golfers, by directing water to the surface of the course as opposed to both the surface and surrounds. “We apologise for any inconvenience caused both during the course closure and once the works are completed – when workers might be on the course doing some remedial repairs. However, it is important to keep in mind this will benefit players in the longer term,” he said.
