New Plan Takes Libraries and Museums into the Future
Based on community feedback, a plan to improve the City of Melville’s libraries and museums was launched to the public at the newly-refurbished Canning Bridge Library Lounge in Applecross yesterday (Thursday, 1 September 2011).
More than 2,000 people participated in the Future Plan for Libraries, Museums and Local History 2011-2015 consultation through community forums, online surveys and phone surveys.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said, “The City has ensured the Future Plan has taken into account: social interaction; entertainment; cultural enrichment; learning and education."
“For instance, this means that residents can look forward to spending time in a library space that is a meeting place, where they can have fun, be informed and learn from both traditional and technological perspectives.
“Over the next five years, residents will begin to notice a range of improvements in the libraries such as changes to opening hours and more accessible shelving. Residents will also notice an improved look, layout and furnishings to provide a welcoming ‘lounge’ feel, such as at Canning Bridge Library. In line with residents’ suggestions, we will also work towards offering downloadable media resources, e-books and magazines, as well as creating some quiet spaces and spaces for interactive programs.
“The City will offer wireless internet in all libraries before the end of 2011 and we will encourage residents to enjoy a coffee in the libraries with new machines, to complement the experience.
“With the City’s five libraries attracting over 800,000 visits a year and loaning more than one million items a year, it is imperative that we stay relevant to what library users would like to see in the future. The Future Plan takes on community members’ feedback so the City can provide services that are of value."
Chief Executive Officer and State Librarian of the State Library of Western Australia Margaret Allen said, “The City’s Future Plan for its libraries, museums and local history services provides an innovative and forward thinking approach to cultural experiences.”
“The launch of the Canning Bridge Library Lounge is a wonderful new initiative. In addition to traditional library services, it provides an inspiring space to support people to learn together and participate in a range of events and activities – it’s a real community space that can be used in different ways to bring people together.”
The City is also accessing ways to improve the profile and accessibility of its museums, including Wireless Hill museum and the surrounding park.
In addition, a feasibility study will also be undertaken to investigate the possibility of relocating the Melville Discovery Centre to the AH Bracks Library site in Melville.
