New Mayor Honoured to Lead City of Melville

Published Date: 24 October 2007, 12:00 AM

New City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said one of his first goals was to unite the Council and strengthen the collaboration between Elected Members and Council officers.

At Monday night’s (22 October) swearing in ceremony, Mr Aubrey said he wanted to learn from the lessons of the past and look towards a new future to get the job done for the residents and ratepayers of the City of Melville.

Married with three children, Cr Aubrey has lived in Leeming and worked as a teacher at Wesley College since 1983. He was elected to Council 1991 and has served as Deputy Mayor.

During his time on Council, he has championed for the construction of the Roe 8 project and the Fremantle Eastern Bypass. He helped to instigate the postal voting system for local government elections, establish the Community Safety and Security patrol service and led the campaign to conserve Ken Hurst Park. In recent times, he has been a strong supporter of the redevelopment of the Leeming Recreation Centre.

At the ceremony, Mr Aubrey said the days since the election had had been some of the happiest of his life. “It is a great honour for me to be leading this City for the next four years,” he said. “I want to be able to look back on my first term with pride and say that I achieved everything I set out to do and that I didn’t let anybody down along the way.”

Mayor Aubrey also welcomed the three new Councillors – Nicholas Pazolli (Applecross-Mt Pleasant Ward), Guy Wieland (Bicton-Attadale Ward) and Rasa Subramaniam (Bull Creek-Leeming Ward) – to the Council. “They have shown a commitment to supporting their local communities and now it is time for them to represent the wider interests of the City of Melville as a whole,” he said.

Cr Harvey Everett was elected as the new Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.

Mr Aubrey said he would like to acknowledge outgoing Mayor Katherine Jackson and her contributions to the community as City of Melville Mayor for the past 12 years and as Councillor for five years. “On behalf of the City of Melville, I thank her for all her efforts and wish her well in her future endeavours,” he said.

The Mayor’s term will expire on 15 October 2011.
