Neighbourhood Plans to Enhance Community Spirit

Published Date: 26 October 2009, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville will on Thursday, 5 November 2009 be launching its first ‘Neighbourhood Plans’, aimed at helping the community feel part of their neighbourhood by promoting a sense of place and building community spirit.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said plans had been developed for the City’s North West, North East, South West, and South East neighbourhoods. “Each of the plans provides a snapshot of the respective neighbourhood’s history, the people who live there, and the assets they share. There are also examples of community stories and feedback gained from a number of community consultation and engagement activities,” he said.

“In line with this, in its success at the recent International Awards for Liveable Communities, the City of Melville was recognised by the judging panel as having used a plethora of community engagement methods, all of which appear to ensure public involvement in the community’s future. The City won its population category for the most liveable community, as well as the Community Sustainability Award – and was described as showing particularly demonstrable expertise in the field of community sustainability,” he said.

A/Chief Executive Officer Christine Young said the Neighbourhood Plans would assist the organisation in being more responsive and adaptive to the community through improved customer service. “Neighbourhood Plans are a key priority for the organisation as a way of identifying challenges and opportunities, as well as possible solutions to enhance the way we live, work and play here, today and into the future,” she said.

The plans for each neighbourhood will be launched at the City of Melville Civic Centre, from 5.00pm to 6.30pm on Thursday, 5 November. The North West Neighbourhood Plan covers the suburbs of Attadale, Bicton, Melville and Palmyra, while the North East one covers Applecross, Mount Pleasant, Ardross, Brentwood, Myaree, Alfred Cove and Booragoon. The South West Neighbourhood Plan covers Kardinya, Winthrop, Murdoch and Willagee, and the South East one is for the suburbs of Leeming, Bull Creek and Bateman.
