Multicultural Performance Celebrates City’s Seniors
Seniors are encouraged to dust off their traditional attire for a celebration that will bring together an extravagant performance of music and dance from Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.
The City of Melville is presenting Dances of the World on Monday, 13 October from 10.30am to 2.00pm at the Melville Civic Centre Main Hall, as part of a combined Seniors Week and Multicultural Week celebration.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said many of our seniors have immigrated to Australia and contributed to the cultural diversity within the municipality. “According to the 2006 Census, one quarter of the City of Melville’s seniors were born overseas,” he said. “This is a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate our multicultural community.”
Supported by Council on the Aging WA, Garden City Shopping Centre and Department for Communities, this free event will feature many giveaways and prizes including the grand prize for best traditional costume.
Community Development Officer – Seniors, Roberta Gripton said Seniors Week and Multicultural Week were celebrated during October and November. “The City of Melville is taking this opportunity to recognise and celebrate the lives of our seniors who were born either in Australia or overseas,” she said. “This celebration will help to build a sense of community spirit, where people feel part of their neighbourhood.”
Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning 1300 MELVILLE (1300 635 845) by Wednesday, 1 October. A light lunch will also be provided.
The Civic Centre Main Hall is located at 10 Almondbury road, Booragoon.
