Mosaic Connects Multicultural Community

Local residents are invited to George Humes Park, in Willagee, from Tuesday, 12 February to take part in an exciting new art project.

The park will be buzzing with excitement as local artist Angela Thomas works with the community to create an eight-metre circular mosaic that celebrates the park’s namesake George Humes and the work he did to unify the different ethnic groups in Willagee.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said George Humes was instrumental in creating harmony within Willagee. “The mosaic will commemorate him and reflect his positive impact on the community,” he said.

The mosaic titled Harmony Bridge will be constructed where the footpaths intersect, from tiles and polished stones designed to depict four hands meeting at the centre.

Ms Thomas said the design was symbolic of people joining together. “The four distinctive hands represent the diversity of the Willagee community and those different cultures coming together,” she said. “The project continues on George Humes’ ideals of breaking down barriers and bringing people together.”

The artwork is anticipated to be completed in early March in time for Harmony Week, which runs from Saturday, 15 March to Friday, 21 March 2008.

Ms Thomas said Willagee was a great community and the project would be something to bring the community together. “I encourage anyone who would like to be involved to come down and get their hands dirty,” she said. “After the project is finished, we will be dedicating a section of the mosaic to the children who have taken part to ensure they become a part of the history of Willagee.”

George Humes Park is on the corner of Winnacott and Archibald streets, Willagee. For more information, phone the Willagee Community Centre on 9364 0848.
