Melville’s Mentoring Program Paints the Way
The City of Melville, in collaboration with the Public Transport Authority (PTA), is giving one young person the opportunity to enter into a mentoring program with one of Perth’s best urban artists, Dan Duggan.
Dan, who has more than ten years experience in the industry, will assist and mentor the young artist to design and create the entry statement wall at Bull Creek train station, with help from two young local artists from the City’s PHAZE urban art project.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the program would help to support and mentor local youth in a constructive way. “This program will help assist aspiring young artists in their skill development and teach them a range of different techniques,” he said. “This youth-arts focused program is also a fantastic career opportunity that will open a number of doors for the young people involved.”
The young person selected for the program will be mentored throughout the entire process and will be involved in every aspect from the design, meeting with the City of Melville and PTA staff, to the purchasing of materials and the creation of the artwork. As part of the process they will also be taken on as an employee by Dan and will be paid for their service.
The City of Melville and the Public Transport Authority have previously collaborated on similar projects including completing murals at the Murdoch train station bridge and at the Bull Creek train station underpass. A team of local youth completed murals on the graffiti hot-spot to provide positive community art projects for young people and to help reduce incidences of illegal graffiti on the area.
The mentoring project will commence in late 2008 and will continue until the completion of the project.
