Twelve Western Australian artists were crowned the best in Melville at the 32nd City of Melville Art Awards, on Friday 20 June.

The winners of 12 of the 13 categories were announced at the opening ceremony at Melville Civic Centre, with the People’s Choice Award to be announced on Wednesday, 2 July 2008.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said over the past 30 years, the art awards had grown into one of the City’s most prestigious and well-received cultural events. “The awards have become a very prestigious and well-know community event that provides an avenue for up-and-coming artists to exhibit their works,” he said. “The 2008 art awards are a magnificent exhibition of talent with the category winners displaying exceptional talent, creativity and vision in their work.”

The difficult task of selecting winners was left to the respected judging panel which comprised PhD Art History student and former City of Melville Art Award winner Julia Alessandrini, artist, designer and course coordinator for the fashion and design program at Curtin University Anne Farren and sculptor Jon Denaro.
