Melville Students Show Seniors how to get Phone Savvy
City of Melville seniors have an opportunity to learn some of the latest mobile phone skills such as texting, taking photos, using the new Next G network or simply how to make a phone call from a mobile telephone.
The phone savvy generation of students from Melville Senior High School will run free lessons in a stress-free environment to help local seniors get in touch with the latest technology.
The lessons will be taught in small group sessions or individually on Thursday 7, 14 and 21 August, from 9.45am to 10.45am.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said that mobile phone lessons were a great initiative inspired by the Southern Districts Senior Citizens Club and the City of Melville that would bring together two generations. “Mobile phones and new technology can be daunting at any age,” he said. “After receiving a Telstra grant, the City of Melville approached the school with the idea as it is a great opportunity for youth to share their knowledge and engage with the community’s senior citizens,” he said.
New Telstra Next G mobile phones will be provided at the sessions or participants are welcome to bring their own. Following the free workshop, there will be a morning tea provided.
Melville Senior High School teacher Nicole Clune said the students were excited about running the lessons. “This is the first time we have done something like this,” she said. “We’ve had an overwhelming response from seniors wanting to be involved and the students are really enthusiastic about it.”
Melville Senior High School is at 18 Potts Street, Melville.
