Melville Moves to the Diafrix Beat

Published Date: 02 February 2009, 01:41 PM

The City of Melville in association with KULCHA Multicultural Arts of WA presents Diafrix, a Kultour touring event.

Diafrix are one of Australia’s most exciting and original live acts and will be entertaining Melville locals with a free performance this month. The group will also interact with young people during a free workshop where participants can experiment with different beats, rhythms and sounds.

Diafrix will mix traditional African rhythms with funk, ragga, soul and hip hop to entertain Melville residents when they perform on Friday, 27 February 2009 from 6.00pm to 7.00pm at the Willagee Community Centre.

Diafrix have established themselves on the Australian music scene since they took out Triple J’s Next Crop Award in 2005. Fronted by African born MCs Azmarino and Momo, Diafrix has a positive hip hop style and their African cultural twist and no swearing policy means their music can be enjoyed by all.  The Presentation of Diafrix is proudly supported by Kultour: touring multicultural arts, changing Australian culture - an initiative of the Australia Council for the Arts.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said that a number of events and programs catering to the diverse interests of young people in the community were planned for the coming year. “The City of Melville has planned activities for young people based around the arts, music, skate, BMX and other sports,” he said. “This performance is a great chance for young people from all cultures to get involved in music in a positive and fun way.”

The Diafrix performance is supported by a free workshop to be held on Thursday, 26 February 2009 from 5.00pm to 6.00pm at the City’s youth space, The Vault, at the City of Melville Civic Centre. Participants will develop their own rhythms using hip hop style and beat boxing before the performance kicks off the following night.

Youth Engagement Officer Craig Stephenson said the City had chosen the Diafrix performance and workshop as one of the YAC It Up alternative events to be held throughout the City in 2009. “This is a great opportunity for young people to get involved by enhancing their hip hop music skills in a positive fashion before seeing Diafrix perform live,” he said.

The Contemporary Music Touring Program aims to give all Australians, wherever they live, better access to some of the country’s best live contemporary music. The Australian Government is proud to be associated with the Kultour tour of Diafrix.
