Mayor Aubrey Returned as Election Results Announced

Published Date: 17 October 2011, 12:00 AM

Russell Aubrey has been re-elected Mayor of the City of Melville, commanding 45.44 per cent of the vote – the biggest winning margin in the history of the City.

The next closest candidate was former Mayor and current Councillor June Barton who gained 23.28 per cent of the vote.

Mayor Aubrey described his win as "a proud but humbling moment".

“This result demonstrates that ratepayers support my election platforms of: advocating for an extension to Roe Highway; making the Canning Bridge Precinct Vision a reality; and continuing to ensure a Safer Melville,” he said.

“I am committed to these goals and I thank my supporters for placing their trust in me.”

The longest currently serving elected member Clive Robartson was elected Deputy Mayor by his fellow Councillors. Cr Robartson is the member for the Bull Creek - Leeming Ward.

Other election results include: Councillor Nicholas Pazolli securing 60.5 per cent of the vote to be re-elected to the Applecross-Mount Pleasant Ward; Ms Susanne Taylor-Rees was elected as first-time councillor to the Bicton-Attadale Ward with a 58.95 per cent majority and, in an upset, Mr Robert Willis secured the Bullcreek-Leeming Ward seat with a 56.41 per cent majority over outgoing Councillor Rasa Subramaniam.

Three candidates had already been elected unopposed: Mark Reynolds to the University Ward; Mr Duncan McPhail to the City Ward and Mr Richard Hill to the Palmyra-Melville-Willagee Ward.

The 2011 elections were conducted by the Western Australian Electoral Commission and held under a ‘first past the post’ voting system, whereby the candidate with the highest vote wins. A Commission appointed Returning Officer oversees the election process, taking candidate nominations, to supervising the count on election night and declaring the results.

The people of Mt Pleasant should be very pleased that the two elected representitives who have really worked hard on our behalf and made a great difference have been re-elected. Hearty congratulations to our Mayor Russell Aubrey and to Cr. Nick Pazolli. We thank them both for their efforts and their willingness to continue to serve the community in these demanding roles.

I concur with Rhonda that Mayor Aubrey is to be congratulated on his outstanding and historic win. This clearly demonstrates his leadership of the City during difficult times. Congratulations also goes to Clive Robartson elected as Deputy Mayor. This is excellent news. Finally, congratulations to Councillor Nicholas Pazolli for being re-elected to the Applecross Mt Pleasant ward. We have the nexus of a great team for the City - well done to all.

Keep up the Good work

Mayoral Election

Irrespective of your allegience to the mayoral candidates, the City should NOT be gloating over the margin of success of a particular candidate - it should be completely impartial. The comment "the biggest winning margin in the history of the City" is entirely inappropriate, and to a large extent irrelevant given the number of candidates on this occasion, and perhaps their gender.
Besides, Russell Aubrey's share of the vote in the 2011 election (45.44%) is less than the share he achieved at the previous mayoral election in 2007 (55%) - so a greater proportion voted against him on this occasion. What does that say??
