Mayor Adds Splash of Colour to National Meals on Wheels Day

City of Melville Mayor Katherine Jackson is helping to add a little colour to National Meals on Wheels Day this year.

National Meals on Wheels Day on Wednesday, 29 August, recognises the enormous contribution of more than 80,000 volunteers Australia wide.

“Put Colour in Your Day” is the theme of this year’s event. Volunteers will add a little colour to their clients’ day by wearing bright and colourful clothing as well as giving clients a “Happy Meals on Wheels Day” card to accompany their meals.

Mayor Katherine Jackson, who will deliver meals on the day, said National Meals on Wheels Day was a fantastic celebration of volunteers contributing to their community and helping make this wonderful aged care service so successful. “National Meals on Wheels Day is about celebrating the vitality, colour and social interaction provided by Meals on Wheels volunteers to clients each day,” she said.

The City of Melville Meals on Wheels service provides more than 90,000 meals a year to around 600 clients. National Meals on Wheels Day is celebrated every year on the last Wednesday of August.

Australian Meals on Wheels Association President Leon Holmes said the contribution the service made to the Australian community was to be celebrated and the wonderful efforts of the volunteers and staff to be acknowledged.  “For many of our clients, the daily personal contact and friendly smile is a highlight of their day and contributes to enabling them to remain independently in their homes,” he said.
